Date 10/2/2003 12:00 AM | Topic: News

Diversity Week, Sept. 27-Oct. 3, will celebrate cultural and ethnic diversity with lectures, seminars, music performances and other events that showcase the traditions, heritage, values and contributions of the many peoples and cultures that make up "the American quilt."

Luther Diversity Week will formally open Sunday, Sept. 28, 7 p.m., in the Luther Center for Faith and Life with a presentation titled "Going to the Territory: Diversity Blues" by Sheila Radford-Hill, Ph.D., executive director of the Luther Diversity Center. Radford-Hill is the author of "Further to Fly: Black Women and the Politics of Empowerment," a critique of feminist theory and its impact on black women's political culture, published by the University of Minnesota Press.

The Mahotella Queens, South Africa's foremost Afro-pop singing group and winners of the World Music Artist of the Year award in 2000, will perform Sunday, Sept. 28, 9 p.m., in Marty's Cyber Café in the lower level of Luther Centennial Union.

Jack Shaheen, author, media critic and former CBS news consultant on Middle East affairs, will speak Wednesday, Oct. 1, 7 p.m., in the Luther Center for Faith and Life on "Shattering Stereotypes." His presentation will address stereotypical images of racial and ethnic groups, the injury caused by hurtful caricatures of Asians, blacks, Latinos and others, and viable solutions to misperceptions about race and culture.

Luther College Diversity Week recognizes and reflects the values inherent

in the college's dedication to faith and learning. The week's events and programs provide an opportunity to reflect on our differences and to celebrate our common humanity. Luther is committed to working to create a diverse learning environment where people are treated as unique and individuals and are entitled to participate in a learning environment free of bias, harassment and discrimination.

Other Diversity Week events include Brown Bag Seminars, a Diversity Awareness Night, daily chapel services, a dance in Marty's Cyber Café, and the Center Stages Series performance by the Krasnoyarsk National Dance Company of Russia.

All Diversity Week events and programs are open to the public with no charge for admission.

All Diversity Week Brown Bag Seminars will be held at 12 noon in the Mott Room of Luther Centennial Union.

On Tuesday, Sept. 30, discussion leaders will be the Postville Diversity Council. On Wednesday, Oct. 1, discussion leaders will be people who attended the White Privilege Conference. On Thursday, Oct. 2, discussion leaders will be members of the college's GLBTA group.

Diversity topics will be presented by Luther faculty and students in daily chapel services Sept. 29-Oct. 3 at 10 a.m. in the Center for Faith and Life.

The Diversity Week dance in Marty's Cyber Café, Centennial Union, will begin at 9 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27.
