That's unthinkable, and runs counter to human nature." The truth is actually fairly simple: People -- an increasing number -- are underwater on their homes, which is to say that their mortgages are now larger than their home values. I was talking to a friend the other day who was thinking of getting a home equity loan in order to payoff his credit cards and lower his interest rate. As soon as I heard his idea, I started jumping up and down while screaming "NO NO NO". My reply to his idea was a resounding no. Credit card debt is unsecured, whereas other debt like your mortgage is secured (your home acts as security against your debt). With credit card debt, there is no backing security, which means that credit card debt is high risk for banks and hence the high interest rates
