In a press conference earlier this week, legendary quarterback John Elway officially announced plans to retire from his 16-year career in the NFL. During his career, Elway has stacked up a long list of NFL records including 148 victories and 47 game-tying or game-winning passes made in the fourth quarter. Elway rides close to quarterback Dan Marino in a number of accomplishments including passing yards, touchdown passes and total offense yards. Elway, 38, won his first Super Bowl in 1998 with the Denver Broncos and managed a repeat performance in January. He spent every year in the NFL in Colorado and rumors of club ownership are included in Elway's post-retirement plans.
"Show me the money!"
In a record-setting sports franchise business agreement, Daniel Snyder, 34, will acquire ownership of the Washington Redskins for $800 million dollars. The sum will be the largest exchange for a sports franchise in North America and Snyder will be the youngest current league owner. Speculations regarding current franchise employment were laid to rest as Snyder announced plans to keep coach Norv Turner and Charley Casserly, general manager, on the employee list for the '99 season. Snyder also extended job assurance to Redskin Park employees. The agreement, made Monday, includes the Redskins franchise and Jack Kent Cooke Stadium and must be approved by NFL owners. The NFL finance committee will examine the bid before it reaches league owners May 25-26 at their meetings in Atlanta.
U.S. women get kicked, stay strong
U.S. women's soccer team fell short of a victory, finishing 1-2 against China in the international competition at Giants Stadium on Sunday. The loss for the U.S., due in part to a goal by the Chinese in the third minute of overtime, cracked a 50-game winning streak on domestic turf. The match against China was the final game in seven weeks of international competition, leaving the U.S. match record 8-3-1 overall for the year. The U.S. women face Japan today in Charlotte, N.C. for their next match, gearing up for the Women's World Cup which will kick off June 19 in the U.S.
