Amtrak's new high-speed rail system could take 90 minutes off the 4 1/2-hour Boston-New York service and take fares down 30 percent. The new system has 470 miles of electrified track, few curves and 20 new train sets that use the so-called tilt technology. Service will begin in October.
Journalist gets 18 months in child porn case
Journalist Larry Matthews got 18 months in prison for distributing child pornography online, despite his claim that he was researching for a story on child molesters. Matthews, a National Public Radio producer who said he was working on a free-lance magazine article, had pleaded guilty after a judge refused to allow him to use a First Amendment defense.
McDougal urges Arkansans to follow trial
Susan McDougal urged Arkansans to follow her trial, saying that it would expose the ugly nature of the Whitewater investigation. The trial is the result of an indictment alleging criminal contempt and obstruction of justice for her refusal to answer independent counsel Kenneth Starr's questions about the president and first lady. McDougal said she refused to answer the questions because she believed Starr would twist her words and charge her with perjury if he did not get the testimony he wanted.
